Destroyer escorts first went into production because the Royal Navy needed an escort warship which was larger than a corvette, but which could be built faster than a destroyer. Lacking the shipyards to build these types of ships in Britain, they ordered them in the US. Once the US unexpectedly entered World War II, its navy suddenly also needed more escort warships, even warships less capable than destroyers, and the destroyer escort was reluctantly picked to fill the gap.

Despite the Navy's initial reservations, these ships did yeoman service during World War II, fighting in both the Atlantic and Pacific, taking on both U-boat and Japanese submarines and serving as the early warning pickets against kamikazes later in the war. They also participated in such dramatic actions as the Battle of Samar (where a group of destroyers and destroyer escorts fought Japanese battleships and cruisers to protect the escort carriers they were shielding) and the capture of the U-505 (the only major naval vessel captured at sea by the US Navy). The destroyer escorts soldiered on after World War II in both the United States Navy and a large number of navies throughout the world, with several serving into the twenty-first century. This book tells the full story of these plucky ships, from their design and development to their service around the world, complete with stunning illustrations and contemporary photographs.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7698/7367/files/osprey-publishing-usn-destroyer-escorts-ww2__24848.1641547450.1280.1280_38df026d-54f8-468d-b3e4-98fb4095a0f2.jpg?v=1753980928
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7698/7367/files/trumpeter-200-enterprise-cv-6-3712__71810.1641547017.1280.1280_83dc5cd6-037e-4db4-98f6-0426bd67afb0.jpg?v=1753980959
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7698/7367/files/trumpeter-200-scharnhorst-3715__35516.1641547471.1280.1280_2b7a2f1a-f167-4795-8853-a7dfe73fc316.jpg?v=1753980988
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7698/7367/files/afv-club-1350-ijn-i-19-submarine-73506__81043.1641546739.1280.1280_e6f4ad0d-1727-4192-abf2-3a25229e55a6.jpg?v=1753980996
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/7698/7367/files/afv-club-1350-ijn-i-58-submarine-73507__13216.1641547405.1280.1280_9ef70548-9eb9-4fa2-83de-3f4a89df24e9.jpg?v=1753981332
1-700-uss-texas-bb-35-6712
1/700 USS Texas BB-35 6712

Commissioned in March of 1914, USS Texas was the second of two New York-class Battleship built for the United States Navy prior to World Wars I and II. The Japanese correctly predicted this, and prepared a complex operation to use the remaining strength of its navy to defend its possessions. This is the first in a two-part study of the October 23-26 Battle of Leyte Gulf, which resulted in a decisive defeat for the Japanese.

In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Imperial Japanese Navy's First Diversion Strike Force took part in two major actions during the course of the battle: the intense air attacks from US Navy carriers on October 24 (the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, which accounted for superbattleship Musashi), and the compelling action off Samar the following day. A considerable body of myth surrounds the latter, since most accounts of the Samar fighting assume that it should have been a crushing Imperial Japanese Navy victory-in truth, the result was anything but that. This book examines in detail why, following the Samar action, the Imperial Japanese Navy commander of the First Diversion Strike Force (Takeo Kurita) choose to ignore orders and break off the attack into Leyte Gulf-one of the two most controversial decisions of the entire battle. In the first of two volumes, Mark Stille examines the Japanese planning for Leyte Gulf, and the strengths and weaknesses of the Imperial Japanese Navy in this phase of the war alongside the US Navy's planning and command arrangements, which had the potential to end in disaster. They were built in 3 similar sub-classes of which HMS Kent was the lead ship of the first class. The county class cruisers had large, strong hulls and were very seaworthy and long ranged but due to treaty restrictions, there was only enough spare displacement available to provide the magazines with reasonable armour, the rest of the important parts had only thin armour. The main requirement for the Royal Navy's cruisers was to protect trade across Britain's global empire and show the flag in far away ports and the County Class cruisers were a great success in this role and proved able in combat too.

In WW2 HMS Kent was assigned to a hunting group, searching for the German Adm Graf Spee. After the destruction of the Graf Spee, she escorted convoys in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean before being torpedoed. The torpedoing occurred in September 1940, when Kent was part of a Royal Navy fleet based around the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and battleship, HMS Valiant, attacked axis shipping in Benghazi harbour. Kent was hit in the stern by a torpedo launched from an Italian Air Force SM.79 bomber, which kept her out of action for a year. Following repairs, she was assigned to the Home Fleet and escorted Russian convoys for the next 3 years before escorting Royal Navy aircraft carriers that were attacking the German battleship Tirpitz.
