This model kit recreates the M551 Sheridan Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle (AR/AAV). The M551 was designed as airdrop capable armor with wading capabilities, a key concept as the U.S. took on the role of global policeman post WWII. With an aluminum hull and rolled steel turret, it weighed just 15 tons, but had impressive firepower in the shape of the M81 152mm gun/launcher, which could fire standard rounds and MGM-51 Shillelagh missiles. The M551 was in service with active units from 1968 to 1996, and saw action in the jungles of Vietnam.

Sheridans reached U.S. cavalry units in Vietnam in early 1969. They were sent without their missile equipment and used the large-caliber gun for close support. Mine damage and other service problems led to protective changes, including additional armor and field-fitted screens or machine-gun shields.

The M551 Sheridan was designed to give airborne forces a light, transportable armored vehicle with substantial firepower. Its aluminum hull and steel turret kept weight down, while the 152 mm gun-launcher could fire conventional ammunition or the Shillelagh missile system.
This Tamiya kit concentrates on the Vietnam configuration and supplies two 1969 marking options. HARD CORE belongs to the 25th Infantry Division’s cavalry, while CANARY CAGE is assigned to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. Their overall Olive Drab finish should be interpreted in its Vietnam-era context rather than automatically using a WWII No. 9 recipe.
