The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American teen-series fighters, which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War.
This specific model kit depicts the F-14A Tomcat variant. The F-14A was the initial two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather interceptor fighter variant for the U.S. Navy. It first flew on December 21, 1970. As a U.S. Navy fighter it fulfilled the dual roles of long range interceptor and air superiority fighter, and later bomber. Deployed from 1974 to 2006, it successfully employed a "swing wing", which offered variable sweep. The F-14A, which covers most of the early variants, was the most prolifically-produced variant of the Tomcat. 79 were exported to Iran before U.S.-Iranian relations began to deteriorate, and later took part in the Iran-Iraq War.
F-14A: defending the fleet
The F-14A was built around a demanding Cold War problem: defending an aircraft carrier and its escorts before enemy bombers could release their weapons. After the Navy's F-111B project ended, Grumman developed a twin-engine, two-seat fighter with variable-sweep wings and a powerful radar. The Tomcat first flew in December 1970. Its wings could spread for lower-speed flight and carrier approaches, then sweep back for high-speed interception, combining requirements that would otherwise have pulled the design in opposing directions.

A pilot and radar intercept officer shared the work. The AWG-9 radar and long-range Phoenix missile were central to the fleet-defense mission, while Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles and an internal cannon gave the aircraft other engagement options. Early F-14As used Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines, an important distinction from later Tomcat variants. VF-1 and VF-2 introduced the type to operational fleet service, beginning a Navy career that would continue until 2006.
This kit concentrates on the early Tomcat's highly visible years. VF-84's black-tailed Jolly Rogers aircraft from Nimitz in 1979 and VF-2's colorful Enterprise aircraft from 1976 wear gray-and-white naval finishes. The third choice, an Iranian F-14A at Tactical Fighter Base 8 in 1980, exchanges those colors for tan, brown and green camouflage. Together they show how one interceptor design could acquire very different identities through its operators and markings.
