Despite the letter on its nameplate, the Ausf. D was the first production Panther. Developed after German forces encountered the Soviet T-34, it combined sloped armour with a long 7.5 cm KwK 42 gun and wide tracks. It was intended to restore an advantage in tank combat, and its profile already contained the features that would make the Panther recognisable through the rest of the war. The impressive specification was only part of the story. Early Panthers suffered serious reliability problems, and breakdowns reduced the number available for combat. Their large hulls, complicated suspension and demanding powertrain placed considerable burdens on maintenance and recovery crews. The D's distinctive commander’s cupola and early hull details belong to this initial production period; later A and G features should not be mixed in simply because they also appeared on Panthers.
Tamiya's two marking choices follow the fighting around Kursk, beginning with tank 432 of the 51st Panzer Battalion in July 1943. A dark-yellow base carried irregular green and red-brown camouflage applied by units. These early combat vehicles did not yet carry the textured Zimmerit coating associated with many later Panthers. Keeping that smooth surface is a small but important way to anchor the model to its date, while the three-colour pattern offers plenty of character without inventing a generic late-war finish.

This 1/48 scale military miniature model kit recreates the Panther Ausf.D, the very first variant of the highly-rated German tank. Developed partly in answer to the Soviet T-34, the Panther offered a complete performance package, with an imposing L/70 7.5cm gun, sloped armor for superior survivability, and excellent maneuverability.
