Gneisenau was the second in line of the Scharnhorst-class Battlecruisers which were built for the Kriegsmarine. Commissioned in May of 1938, she saw extensive action during the war, and usually served with Scharnhorst on various operation, including Operation Weserübung. Gneisenau was decommissioned in 1942 where she sustained heavy damage in dry-dock during repairs. Inevitably, she was scrapped after the war.
