1/72 F-84F Thunderstreak Pt.2 72147
Build This Aircraft
Complete original Sword palette for all four F-84F marking schemes, including the A–N detail legend. All store paints are approximate options and start unchecked. The 23 source requirements use 22 purchase cards because Aluminium and Natural Aluminium share one candidate. Choose a marking and the B/E interior and L/F seat-cushion options before buying. Digital swatches cannot certify dried hue, sheen or metallic reflection.
Original palette, marking schemes and builder choices
Sword’s original booklet uses generic color names and selected FS/RAL references. The 14-letter detail legend and all four marking schemes are included below. Store options are unchecked approximations; compare the source role and paint finish before choosing.
- A Black. Seat, controls and instrument-panel details; French scheme black areas.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Black AK11029. Neutral near-black swatch for the original Black label. Sword specifies no sheen; this candidate is matt. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- B Zinc chromate. Seat and B/E cockpit, wheel-bay and inner-canopy alternatives.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Zinc Chromate Yellow AK11858. Yellow zinc-chromate interpretation of the generic label, consistent with the yellow-green wheel-bay illustration. Sword gives no yellow/green subtype or paint standard; compare the chosen aircraft before use. B and E are alternatives where the question-mark symbol appears. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- C Silver. Wheel hubs and silver detail callouts.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Silver AK11209. Bright silver metallic candidate for the separate Silver callout. Metallic reflection is not reproduced by a flat digital swatch. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Metallic.
- D Aluminium / Natural Aluminium. D Aluminium detail/tank callouts and French overall Natural Aluminium.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Aluminium AK11207. Aluminium metallic candidate covers both D Aluminium and French Natural Aluminium. Both source labels remain distinct below; one bottle is offered for these two roles. It is metallic paint, not bare metal, and the dried sheen is unverified. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Metallic.
- E Light Grey. Instrument-panel/gear detail and B/E cockpit, wheel-bay and canopy alternatives.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Sky Grey AK11012. Light neutral-grey primary swatch for the uncoded Light Grey label. This generic role is kept separate from FS36622. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- F Red. Seat-cushion alternative to L Brown; German red areas and Belgian nose detail.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Deep Red AK11088. Saturated red primary swatch for the uncoded Red label. Sword gives no sheen; this candidate is matt. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- G Yellow. A–N general detail legend G; retained even where a separate placement is not specified.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Deep Yellow AK11045. Opaque yellow primary swatch for the uncoded Yellow legend entry. No commercial paint code or specific finish is printed. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- H Green. A–N legend H and French scheme Green.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Deep Green AK11142. Opaque deep-green primary swatch for the uncoded Green label and French green areas. The source gives no standard or sheen. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- I Tyres Black. Main and nose tyres.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Rubber Black AK11027. Very dark warm rubber-black swatch preserves the tyre role. This is an opaque matt paint, not a black wash. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- J Dirty Aluminium. Intake/internal metal surfaces and landing-gear/detail parts marked J.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Dark Aluminium AK11208. Darker aluminium metallic candidate for Dirty Aluminium on intake, landing-gear and other metal details. It provides a dark metal tone; it does not reproduce dirt or add a weathering product. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Metallic.
- K Chrome. Chrome detail callouts on seat, instruments, landing-gear pistons and light detail.
Store option: Super Chrome AK9198. Reflective chrome-effect candidate for Chrome details. AK9198 is an alcohol-based ultra-gloss ink/resin paint; smooth preparation affects reflection. Its mirror effect is different from ordinary silver metallic paint. Physical appearance remains unverified. Paint type: Alcohol-based ink/resin paint. Finish: Ultra-gloss chrome reflection.
- L Brown. Seat cushion: L Brown or F Red.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Dark Brown AK11109. Warm dark-brown primary swatch for the uncoded Brown seat-cushion option. It remains an alternative to F Red. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- M Gun metal. Jet/exhaust detail marked M.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Gun Metal AK11212. Dark gunmetal primary swatch and metallic pigmentation preserve the Gun metal role. No wash or transparent effect is substituted. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Metallic.
- N Olive. Seat harness/detail marked N.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Olive Green AK11147. Muted olive-green primary swatch is an approximation of the source label Olive. The original label is not expanded or assigned an invented standard. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- FS36622 Light Grey. Ohio and Belgian camouflage undersides: FS36622 Light Grey.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Camouflage Grey FS 36622 AK11890. AK’s primary chart names Camouflage Grey FS36622. The standard agrees with the printed reference, but the cross-brand paint and dried finish are still an unchecked approximation. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- FS30219 Tan. Ohio and Belgian camouflage: FS30219 Tan.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Australian Camouflage Brown AK11347. AK’s primary equivalence chart associates AK11347 with FS30219. Its warm tan/brown swatch supports an approximate option for the printed Tan; the Australian product name does not change the Sword reference. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- FS34064 Dark Green. Ohio and Belgian camouflage: FS34064 Dark Green.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Black Green AK11160. Very dark green primary swatch offered only as a visual approximation. AK11160 has no verified FS34064 equivalence. The original specifies FS34064 for both the Ohio and Belgian schemes. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- FS34102 Medium Green. Ohio and Belgian camouflage: FS34102 Medium Green.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Dark Green (FS34102) AK11342. AK’s primary chart explicitly identifies AK11342 as FS34102. AK calls it Dark Green while Sword calls the same reference Medium Green; the source name remains unchanged. Cross-brand dried hue and sheen are unverified. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- FS34088 Olive drab. French anti-glare/olive-drab areas: FS34088 Olive drab.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Australian Camouflage Green AK11348. AK’s primary equivalence chart associates Australian Camouflage Green AK11348 with FS34088; its olive swatch supports the candidate. This is still an approximation, and the printed French Olive drab name is preserved. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- RAL7001 Silver Grey. German scheme: RAL7001 Silver Grey.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Pale Grey AK11013. AK’s primary equivalence chart associates Pale Grey AK11013 with RAL7001. Its neutral grey swatch supports the source Silver Grey; this is an opaque matt grey, not metallic silver. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- RAL7012 Basalt Grey. German camouflage: RAL7012 Basalt Grey.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Basalt Grey AK11021. AK’s primary chart associates Basalt Grey AK11021 with RAL7012. Its dark neutral grey swatch supports the source; cross-brand dried hue and sheen are not certified. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
- RAL6014 Yellowolive Green. German camouflage: RAL6014 Yellowolive Green.
Store option: 3G Acrylic Dark Olive Green AK11421. Dark muted olive-green primary swatch is a visual approximation for Yellowolive Green. AK11421 is not documented as RAL6014 and no exact standard equivalence is claimed. Paint type: AK 3Gen water-based acrylic. Finish: Matt.
Marking schemes
- Ohio: F-84F, 162nd TFS, 178th TFG, Ohio Air National Guard 1968. Exterior references: FS36622 Light Grey, FS30219 Tan, FS34064 Dark Green and FS34102 Medium Green.
- France: F-84F 4-UO, EC 2/4 La Fayette, Armée de l’Air. Natural Aluminium, Green, Black and FS34088 Olive drab.
- Germany: F-84F DC-124, 1. Staffel JaboG 33, Luftwaffe, May 1959. RAL7001 Silver Grey, Red, RAL7012 Basalt Grey and RAL6014 Yellowolive Green, plus the Aluminium tank detail.
- Belgium: F-84F 53-6806, FU-154, No. 2 Sq. Belgian Air Force. FS36622 Light Grey, FS30219 Tan, FS34064 Dark Green, FS34102 Medium Green and the Red nose detail.
- The Ohio and Belgian legends both print FS34064. This reference is retained exactly. The AK11160 option is a dark-green visual approximation without a verified FS34064 equivalence.
Interior and assembly choices
- Where the question-mark symbol is shown, choose B Zinc chromate or E Light Grey for cockpit components, wheel bays and inner canopy frames. B on the resin seat remains a separate callout. Sword supplies no yellow/green subtype for Zinc chromate; the offered yellow candidate is an interpretation, not a manufacturer paint code.
- The seat cushion offers L Brown or F Red. N is printed only as Olive and is retained without an added standard.
- Choose the closed canopy in step 16 or the open canopy in step 17. The seat is marked U1 URETHAN in the parts map. Use a suitable CA adhesive for the urethane/resin seat; polystyrene cement is for styrene parts. Use a suitable clear-parts adhesive for glazing.
- Step 4 shows a ballast symbol without a stated weight; follow the original placement and check the model’s balance.
- The original covers 17 assembly steps, stencils, four marking schemes and the canopy/wheel mask supplement. The mask sheet identifies optional liquid-mask areas. No paint-mixing ratios, pilot paint list or weathering products are specified.
Paint types, finishes and supplies
- The paint cards preserve all 23 distinct source requirements. D Aluminium and French Natural Aluminium share one AK11207 purchase card; no second bottle is implied. Generic Light Grey and Olive remain separate from the more specific FS36622 and FS34088 references.
- All paints are approximate store options and start unchecked, including candidates whose manufacturer chart cites the same FS or RAL reference. Printed source names and standards do not establish a physically verified cross-brand match.
- AK 3Gen opaque colors are water-based acrylics with a matt finish; Silver, Aluminium, Dark Aluminium and Gun Metal are metallic acrylics. The original does not separately specify sheen for its generic colors. Digital color chips cannot reproduce metallic reflection or certify dried color and sheen.
- Chrome uses the separate AK9198 Super Chrome alcohol-based ink/resin formula for a reflective chrome effect. A smooth surface affects the result. It is not an ordinary silver acrylic. Use AK9199 only if thinning or cleaning this family; AK 3Gen thinner is for the AK 3Gen paints.
- Tools, masking, decal solution and thinners are optional purchases. Cement and CA depend on the material being joined, so check what you already own. Unavailable products remain disabled. No primer, varnish or weathering product has been added as a kit paint requirement.
