The Librarian’s Apprentice is an all-ages solo journaling RPG set within an infinite, ever-shifting Great Library. You play as the apprentice to a Librarian, accompanied by your familiar, embarking on a journey through endless halls in search of six requested documents.
Built using the Firelights system by Fari RPGs, the game is presented in a compact format: three trifold brochures and a bookmark-style character sheet. Each brochure covers different aspects of play, from core rules and character creation to world-building tables, creatures, patrons, and narrative complications.
Inspired by works such as The Stygian Library, L-space concepts from Terry Pratchett, and the imaginative worlds of Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away and Kiki’s Delivery Service, the game emphasizes exploration, discovery, and emergent storytelling.
Players define their character’s background and the nature of the Library itself, then use a mix of playing cards and dice to navigate, resolve actions, and map their journey. Tables and prompts generate vast variation in locations, events, and inhabitants, creating a highly replayable experience.
To play, you’ll need a journaling method, a flat surface for mapping, a standard deck of playing cards, two six-sided dice, a token, and time to explore—typically 30–90 minutes, though sessions can extend as long as desired.
