What Is the TMM Technique?
True Metallic Metal (TMM) is a painting method that recreates realistic metallic reflections using true metallic paints, instead of simulating them with flat tones as in Non-Metallic Metal (NMM).
TMM helps artists achieve natural light effects and rich metallic depth while maintaining the authentic texture of metal. To master it, painters apply traditional principles of light and shadow—creating smooth gradients, transitions, and contrasts for lifelike finishes. Vallejo’s TMM range was designed to make this approach simple, consistent, and artist-friendly.
The True Metallic Metal Range
Vallejo’s True Metallic Metal Range provides a structured system to achieve professional, realistic metallic results. Organized into 20 chromatic families, each includes four coordinated tones that work seamlessly together:
-
BASE: The primary metallic tone, formulated with ultra-fine pigments for smooth coverage and realistic shine.
-
LIGHT: A brighter, reflective version used for highlights and transitions.
-
SHADE: A non-metallic satin wash that enhances depth while maintaining the metal’s sheen.
-
AIRBRUSH: An airbrush-ready metallic base identical in color to the Base tone, offering even, controlled application.
Each family functions as a complete unit but can also be mixed across families to create custom blends, gradients, or temperature variations while maintaining visual harmony.
Recommended Airbrush Settings:
-
Nozzle: 0.3 mm
-
Pressure: 1.8 bar / 26.1 psi
Allow proper drying time between coats for optimal performance and finish stability.
