About the True Metallic Metal (TMM) Technique
The True Metallic Metal (TMM) technique captures authentic metallic surfaces using real metallic paints, unlike the Non-Metallic Metal (NMM) method, which recreates the effect through flat color simulation.
TMM provides painters with natural reflections, rich depth, and a realistic metallic sheen while preserving the texture and feel of true metal. To master it, artists apply classical light and shadow techniques—using gradients, transitions, and contrast—to enhance volume and realism. Vallejo’s TMM range was developed to make this process intuitive, consistent, and highly effective.
The True Metallic Metal Range
Vallejo’s TMM series is designed for superior control and vibrant metallic finishes across 20 chromatic families, each containing four harmonized tones:
-
BASE: Core metallic tone with ultra-fine pigments for smooth coverage and natural shine.
-
LIGHT: Brighter, more reflective version for highlights and transitions.
-
SHADE: Non-metallic satin wash that adds depth without dulling the metal.
-
AIRBRUSH: Airbrush-optimized version of the Base color for even, strong coverage.
Each family works perfectly on its own or can be mixed across tones to create gradients, color variations, or cross reflections while maintaining visual harmony.
Recommended Airbrush Settings:
Nozzle: 0.3 mm
Pressure: 1.8 bar / 26.1 psi
Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next layer for optimal results and surface stability.
