What Is the TMM Technique?
True Metallic Metal (TMM) is a painting technique that captures realistic metallic effects using genuine metallic paints, rather than imitating metal with flat tones as seen in Non-Metallic Metal (NMM).
TMM delivers natural reflections and a striking finish while preserving the authentic texture and richness of real metal. To master it, artists apply classical principles of light and shadow—building smooth gradients, transitions, and contrasts for realistic volume and depth. Vallejo’s TMM system was developed to make these results easier to achieve with precision and control.
The True Metallic Metal Range
Vallejo’s True Metallic Metal Range provides painters with a structured, reliable method to create vivid, realistic metallic surfaces. Organized into 20 chromatic families, each includes four harmonized tones that work perfectly together:
-
BASE: Core metallic tone with ultra-fine pigments for strong coverage, smooth finish, and realistic shine.
-
LIGHT: Brighter and more reflective for highlights and transitions.
-
SHADE: Non-metallic satin wash that deepens shadows while maintaining luster.
-
AIRBRUSH: Airbrush-ready metallic base, chromatically identical to the Base tone, for smooth, even application.
Each color family functions as a complete set but can also be mixed across ranges to create gradients, color variations, or temperature shifts while preserving visual balance.
Recommended Airbrush Settings:
-
Nozzle: 0.3 mm
-
Pressure: 1.8 bar / 26.1 psi
Allow each layer to dry fully before applying the next for best results and finish stability.
