About the True Metallic Metal (TMM) Technique
The True Metallic Metal (TMM) method reproduces authentic metallic surfaces using real metallic paints, rather than imitating the effect with flat colors as in Non-Metallic Metal (NMM).
This approach allows artists to achieve natural reflections, depth, and shine, while maintaining the richness and texture of true metal. Mastering TMM involves applying classic principles of light and shadow—gradients, contrasts, and transitions—to bring volume and realism to miniature surfaces.
Vallejo’s TMM range was developed as a complete solution for painters seeking controlled, consistent, and highly realistic metallic finishes with professional-grade results.
The True Metallic Metal Range
Each of the 20 chromatic families in the range contains four harmonized tones:
-
BASE: Main metallic tone, offering full coverage and smooth, self-leveling application with ultra-fine metallic pigments.
-
LIGHT: Brighter, reflective version of the Base color for highlights and transitions.
-
SHADE: Non-metallic satin wash designed to add depth and maintain metallic luster in shadows.
-
AIRBRUSH: Pre-thinned metallic Base color, optimized for airbrush performance with strong color intensity.
All tones are cross-compatible, allowing seamless blending across families to create gradients, reflections, and subtle temperature variations while preserving color harmony.
Recommended Airbrush Settings:
-
Nozzle: 0.3 mm
-
Pressure: 1.8 bar / 26.1 psi
-
Allow each coat to dry completely for the most stable, uniform finish.
