A well-known cartographer, Reeve lost a leg in a tragic mapping accident. However, his replacement appendage was measured incorrectly and turned out four inches too short. So for an entire summer Reeve was forced to walk in slowly expanding circles while working. While tedious, it did give birth to the world's first topographical map. (His replacement leg arrived early the following fall and was just the right height.)
